Trigger points are hyper-irritable locations within a taut band of muscle that are unpleasant when compressed, contracted, or stretched, and typically refer pain to a location other than the taut band's position.
Trigger points form in the myofascia, primarily where the motor endplate joins the muscular belly. These are palpable nodules within a tight muscle that range in size from 2 to 10 mm and can appear in any skeletal muscle of the body. Trigger points exist in everyone's body. They can be found in babies and children, but their presence does not always imply the development of a pain syndrome. Trigger points are linked to myofascial pain syndrome, physical dysfunction, psychological disturbance, and reduced everyday functioning when they occur.
The goal of myofascial release is to relieve pain by releasing tension and rigidity in trigger points. It's not always easy to figure out which trigger point is causing the pain. It's difficult to pin down pain to a specific trigger site. As a result, rather than treating particular sites, myofascial release is frequently used to treat a large region of muscle and tissue.
Your therapist will massage the myofascia and feel for places that are stiff or tight. Myofascia should be supple and stretchy in nature. With light hand pressure or using an instrument, the therapist will begin massaging and stretching the regions that feel stiff. The therapist then assists in the release of pressure and tightness in the tissue and supporting sheath. The treatment is continued on the same trigger point as well as other trigger points until the therapist feels the tension has been released completely.
